Stand by the Station House and look at the view in 1900. The large building on the hill is the Metropole Hotel built to accommodate the growing number of visitors travelling by train to Padstow. In the middle of the photograph you can see the remnants of the old cliff line.

Billingsgate Market

The coming of the railway in 1899 transformed the fishing trade.
Trains left daily for Waterloo, London, laden with local fish for Billingsgate Market.
The large circle in the foreground was the turntable used for turning around the engines in readiness for the return journey.

Local dignitaries and sponsors of the railway await the arrival of the first train in March 1899.
This was a great event. Note the decoration with flags and ribbons. The Station House and part of the platform still remain.

The Camel Trail

Sadly, the railway link was a victim of Beecham`s Axe and was closed in 1967.
Today the old railway line forms the very popular Camel Trail.

Lowestoft and Scottish herring fleets
Lowestoft and Scottish herring fleets

In the early part of the twentieth century Lowestoft and Scottish herring fleets visited annually following the shoals of herring.
Today there are local fishing boats potting for crab and lobsters and the fishermen`s stores have been modernised.

The building on the right is the Customs House. This was the home of the Excise Officers and now a popular restaurant.
Next door at Raleigh Court, Sir Walter Raleigh visited to collect the port taxes.

Abbey House

Dating from the 14th century, is probably the oldest building in Padstow and is little changed in its appearance.
Port dues for the Priorywere collected here, and was also a Guild House. It is now a private residence.

Through these gates you would have entered the Lower Dock, one of about five shipbuilding yards in the town. Today this path leads to the outer quay and Ferry Steps. A stroll up the hill takes you to the War Memorial and the beaches.

The Market Place in the 1940's. Today the 1960`s building occupied by Barclays Bank dominates the scene.
The function of the shops has changed radically. Today shops reflect the tourist industry.
