Forum Wetland
(feature 1 of 17)

Directions: From the Forum Piazza, travel down Stocker Road to Prince of Wales Drive and turn right. With caution, cross over service yard entrance and take the steps on the right hand side. Go past Streatham Farm and the Forum Wetlands will be on the right hand side of the library.

The Forum Wetland forms part of the Forum Development. A series of ponds were created which are sustainably designed to take water from the roof of the building and store it. The rainwater filters naturally from the high point of the pond on the Piazza, down the side of the Auditorium to the lower holding pond at the side of the Library and Streatham Farm. This is a lovely place to take a calm and rejuvenating break from library study.

Things to notice: bullrushes, teasels and thistledown blowing in the breeze.

The calligraffiti spells the Arabic word for
“knowledge” and provides an incredible
backdrop to the pond.

(feature 11 of 17)

Directions: Walk onto Rennes Drive. Turn right and continue to where the corner bears sharp left. The pond is 50m ahead on the right hand side.

The structure of the Streatham Campus, as we know it today, was principally created during the 60s and 70s following a development plan presented to the University by William Holford and Partners. It was during this period that the existing streams were dammed to form a series of ponds that are subject to sympathetic
management to encourage wildlife.
This pond forms part of the waterways of the Hoopern Valley and has been stocked with a range of fish and attracts wildlife including: mallards, moorhens, and herons.

Directions: Continue to follow the path and stream uphill, past a wooden house on the right. The upper pond is towards the top of this pathway on the left hand side, in a wooded area.

A one-metre strip at each of the pond edges is left uncut to support amphibians and small mammals and birds, providing them with an area in which they can safely move up and down the water's edge by reducing the risk they have of being exposed to predators.
The mixed vegetation around the areas of standing water includes Willow and Alder trees and marginal plants such as Bulrush and branched Bur-reed. These provide an excellent habitat for a range
of waterfowl which regularly nest and raise their young in the Valley.

Things to notice: the variety of plants, water boatmen, as you walk away look out across the campus to see a perfect view of the clock tower.

(feature 14 of 17)

Directions: Retrace you steps back down the path towards the main campus. Lower Taddiforde Valley Pond will be found on the right hand side as you approach the end of the meadow path.

The Taddiforde Valley consists of a series of man-made ponds constructed during the 1960s and 70s, to mimic natural watercourses. The ponds are fed by the Taddiforde Brook and its tributaries. The area is managed sympathetically, with fallen branches left in some areas to promote roosting points for birds. Habitat piles have also been left in selected areas to provide wildlife with sources of food, shelter and hibernation sites. Amphibians such as Toads and Newts utilise the habitats provided in the valley.
There are also records of the site being used by Dormouse, Hedgehog and Water Vole, priority species in the local Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP.) The watercourse has plant species such as Watercress, Pond Sedge, Lesser Water Parsnip and Lesser Reed Mace, along with several water-dependent insects.

Things to notice: birdsong, diversity of trees and plantings

My Jubilee Water Walk Notes

Jubilee Water Walk

Jubilee Water Walk

Discovering the waterways and features on the Streatham Campus.

The Project
The Diamond Waterways project is an exciting element of the University’s Jubilee Celebrations. The project focuses on the water bodies and features on the Streatham Campus and aims to enhance biodiversity and provide an opportunity to connect with our natural environment. It is a collaborative initiative bringing together Arts and Culture, Estate Services, Wellbeing, Sustainability, Students’ Guild, our research community, staff and students. There are four phases to the initiative:

Restore: A schedule of small scale remedial works to enhance the beauty of the waterway and benefit wildlife ecology through improved oxygenation and flow.

Revive: A programme of targeted works including canopy reduction, vegetation clearance and de-silting of the ponds and streams. Working with academic specialists and students to evaluate the impact of our activities.

Rediscover: The Jubilee Water Walk has been designed to encourage students, staff and visitors to rediscover the Streatham Campus.

Reconnect: The Jubilee Water Walk provides a practical opportunity for people to connect with nature and our natural environment.
